At Progression, when we talk about healthy high performance, we are referring to 4 key elements that contribute to workplace and individual wellbeing.
These are the key elements that support healthy high performance at work.
Manageable levels of stress
Stress is a natural part of life and doesn’t have to be negative
Is the stress created by your work due to the pressure and challenges of the role, or due to unnecessary elements? These could include things like poor communication, ineffective planning and prioritisation, or poorly defined roles and responsibilities.
Do you have the time and support to do the things that help you manage stress?
If it’s a long term role, can you do the role ongoing without negative personal impacts to your health or relationships? Is it sustainable?
Alignment on values
Are the values of the organisation – and your immediate leader - broadly aligned to yours? This can help to increase autonomy and trust, if decisions are made in line with values.
As roles become more specialised and decisions are more dispersed throughout an organisation, value alignment becomes more important as it helps individuals to make more informed decisions.
Positive contribution to your life
This could be personal development, social interaction, financial freedom, and/or a sense of fulfilment or purpose – although this is a risk factor for burnout, if it takes over your life or your identity is too heavily linked to your professional purpose.
Our JARSS-C assessment can help you to understand the factors that are most important in supporting your resilience and motivation at work.
Success measures are well structured, fair and transparent
Are they clearly defined, achievable, without overlaps?
Is there clarity on the priority of each success measure or KPI?
While you may not be able to change success measures in the short term, they have a significant impact on decisions and behaviours within organisations. So increasing clarity and understanding around these measures is likely to reduce unnecessary friction between individuals and teams.
When these elements are in place, employees are clear on what they are striving towards (through success measures), how to make decisions (aligned to values), are supported and able to manage their stress levels, and are committed to the organisation, because they can see the impact of their efforts and the positive impact of their work within their life.
